We are living in the “Age of Information” as experts call it. The rise in the tech industry really changed the way how we interact with everything around us. People usually wait for hours, days, or even weeks to convey information. Today, the entire global economy runs with the help of the internet. Thanks to this amazing tech, we could transfer information at an unprecedented rate. Although technology usually gives a huge advantage to mankind, every piece of tech comes with some caveats. The Internet has bought a huge advantage to everyone, but is it changing people’s behavior?
Reel-life people > Real-life people ?
Not long ago, during my high school time period (around 2014–2016) there weren’t a lot of internet users here in India. Hence, a lot of stuff has to be done the conventional way. We can’t buy groceries instantly, we can’t buy food instantly, we can’t buy things from Amazon instantly. During this time, people didn’t rely much on the internet. I find a contrasting character shift change before and after the internet revolution. During my high school time, people were more friendly, people were more curious to spend their time with the people around them. And yes, People listen. After the internet had become mainstream and the general public started adopting it, there is a cultural change as a whole, people are getting lazy, less curious to know more stuff and people are getting more and more obsessed with social media.
Back in the day, when I hang out with my friends somewhere, people usually don’t use their phones often. But recently, whenever I meet people, people tend to look at their phones often without even talking with the real-life person who is sitting in front of them.
As I mentioned earlier, people of the modern era are far more concerned about making internet connections rather than making real-life connections. I always prefer talking with people in real life because it improves the understanding between the people. No matter how much we could get closer through technological advancements, nothing could match the real human interactions. People nowadays are far less open to know about new people. They are usually limited to the small set of people around them.
Did I just become an introvert?
During high school, I had my whole class as my friend circle. I had a lot of other class friends in my school, Kinda like the “Popular guy”. I talk with a lot of people, I usually hang out with my friends often, usually during weekends. I was an open person to talk to. And I had a pretty good life apart from the studies pressure which every Indian student faces at that time. Thanks to the COVID-19 lockdown, I’ve been sitting inside my home for the past 1 and a half years and now my character seems to be completely changed. My character wasn’t the loud, talkative character as like how it was. I’ve become completely silent, less interacting, and a person who is comfortable speaking online rather than talking in real life. Before lockdown, I like when a lot of people shows up in my home, but now, it is the complete opposite.
Conclusion
Internet is a great tool that benefits humanity. We should be really thankful for existing in this era. Humans are more comfortable, advanced, and have a high standard of living than in the past. Although the internet helps us in a lot of ways of remote connection, it is also absolutely necessary to maintain a proper real-life connection and live as a real human. Ignore if any part of the story sounded offensive. Thanks for reading.
